The feel-good root turmeric
Curcuma (or turmeric) has played an important role in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for 4000 years. In India, this spice is enjoyed every day and is an integral part of Indian cuisine. It is contained in various spice mixtures and gives the classic curry spice its yellow colour. Turmeric is one of the ginger plants and is also found in mustard, margarine, sausages and sauces. The rootstock is relevant here. From this, the curcuminoids, the main ingredients of the turmeric plant, are obtained. It has a fresh, peppery aroma and tastes slightly bitter.
Many health benefits are attributed to the turmeric plant. In recent years, the “Golden Milk”, as the “Curcuma Latte” is also known, has become known as a beneficial drink. (Plant) milk is mixed with turmeric and some coconut oil and drunk warm – a blessing after a stressful day at work. In the cold season, turmeric is often enjoyed with ginger and honey as a warming tea. By the way: the golden-yellow spice also brings color to your meal as a grill spice, with meat and fish or in desserts such as pancakes – a real all-rounder, so to speak!
problem of bioavailability
In addition to the classic nutrients (proteins, fats, carbohydrates), turmeric also contains essential oils and a small percentage of curcuminoids, with curcumin as the main component. The problem here is that these ingredients are fat-soluble and can hardly be absorbed in the watery environment of the intestine. Furthermore, they are quickly broken down and excreted. In order to get enough curcuminoids, one would need to consume large amounts of the distinctive yellow powder. This is where using quality raw materials can help.
