Lutein and zeaxanthin are important components of the macula lutea in the eye (place of sharpest vision). Lutein, zeaxanthin and beta-carotene are among the carotenoids and are pigments that are widespread in the plant kingdom. However, they cannot be produced by the body itself. Experts therefore recommend regular intake of these important substances.
